Red Scapular of the Passion. Approved by Pope Pius IX as a devotion to the Passion of Christ. The Red Scapular, which features images of the Passion of Christ on the Cross and the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary, serves three primary functions:
1. The red scapular is a reminder of the Passion in which the love of God for humanity is made visible in the suffering Christ endured for our redemption. Meditation on the Passion moves our hearts to love, humility, sacrifice, repentance, and gratitude.
2. The red scapular is source of spiritual protection. According to Sister Apolline (of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul), who received this devotion in 1846 from the Lord, the Scapular of the Passion “will prove to us a strong armor against infernal assaults, an impenetrable shield against the arrows of our spiritual enemies.”
3. Jesus also promised that whoever wears this scapular with faith and devotion will receive great increases of faith, hope, and charity every Friday.
