Saint Margaret of Cortona Wallet Size Prayer Card

Prayer card featuring the flower of the Third Order of Saint Francis, Margaret of Cortona. Margaret was born about 20 years after the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. A headstrong and beautiful young woman, she fell in love with a rich noble who took her to his castle as his mistress but who never married her. Margaret bore him a son. One day her lover's dog came home without his master. Margaret followed the dog to a tree deep in the forest where the dog began to dig. Margaret clawed at the dirt and unearthed the corpse of her lover who had been murdered by his enemies.Where is he now? she wondered in terror. Her lover's death was the occasion of her conversion. Margaret gave away all her finery and became a penitent, taking her son with her. Franciscan friars and other lay penitents took pity on her and found her shelter. She lived the rest of her life in prayer, penance, and evangelization of others. Margaret also opened a hospital for the poor whom she and other penitents cared for. A mystic who had deep conversations with Jesus, Margaret lived to see her son become a Franciscan friar.

Saint Margaret of Cortona lived the Rule of 1221 which is lived today by the members of the Confraternity of Penitents. She is one of the patrons of the Confraternity of Penitents. Saint Margaret of Cortona, pray for us.
