[This fresco, The Institution of the Crib at Greccio, by Giotto, is the13th of a series in the Upper Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, illustrating Saint Bonaventure’s Life of Saint Francis. In 1223, Saint Francis asked Messer Giovanni Velita, Lord of Greccio, to prepare a cave with an ox, a donkey, and a manger for a live Nativity scene. Giovanni was a member of the Brothers and Sisters of Penance, who lived according to the 1221 Rule for the laity—the original Rule of the Confraternity of Penitents. Giovanni is likely the man in the white capelet and long grey cloak (of undyed wool, as prescribed in the Rule) standing directly behind Saint Francis. Behind him stands a woman, also in grey, presumably his wife, Madonna Alticama.]
