Obituary: Freida the Furnace
1988-August 2025
Freida the Furnace, a resident employee of Annunciation Woman’s Vita Dei House, Fort Wayne Indiana, unexpectedly wheezed her last in August. Freida heated the firsts floor of 2637 Schele Avenue, Fort Wayne, initially a home for men in alcohol recovery. The men were followed by an order of Franciscan Friars. When they left, Catholic women discerning a vocation or other life choice moved in and the name was changed to Annunciation Women’s Vita Dei House. This two story brick structure has both an attic and a basement furnace. Without complaint, Freida resided in the basement utilities room since her arrival and faithfully and without complaint did her job for 37 years.
Freida’s demise was confirmed by two technicians from two different HVAC companies. They had been diagnosing poor results with the first floor air conditioner which, along with Freida, is part of the heating and cooing system for Annunciation House. Both technicians discovered burnt out wires in Freida’s interior, thus ending her life. May she rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Confraternity of Penitents Renovations Fund, asking that these be used for the Furnace Replacement. For $4,980, Faye the Furnace is waiting to take Freida’s place before the cold October weather arrives. Two matching grants totaling $2500 have been given to the Confraternity of Penitents to bring Faye on board.
