“Our Lady of Unknots,” more commonly known as Our Lady Undoer of Knots or Mary, Untier of Knots, is a devotion to Mary, Mother of God, that symbolizes her ability to intercede and help untangle the complicated problems in our lives. The devotion is inspired by a Baroque painting from around 1700 by Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner depicting Mary untying a knotted ribbon.
Origin and Tradition
The devotion was established in the early 17th century by Jesuit Jakob Rem in Augsburg, Germany, inspired by a troubled couple’s marital problems, which he described as “knots” that Mary could “untie”.
Rem prayed that Mary would untie these difficulties, allowing the couple to grow in their relationship and find wholeness.
The Painting and its Meaning
The central image of the devotion is a painting showing Mary holding and untying a long, knotted ribbon while angels help her with the process.
The knotted ribbon is a powerful metaphor for the complex and overwhelming difficulties people face in life.
The painting shows angels feeding Mary the knotted ribbon and taking away the untied ribbon, symbolizing the flow of grace and the resolution of problems through her intercession.
The other side has the Hail Mary
“Hail Mary, Full of grace. The Lord is whith thee. Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”
