Prayer to Saint Charbel (Sharbel)
O Lord, You inspired Saint Charbel, the saintly monk, to lead the perfect life of a hermit. Thank You for granting him the grace to detach himself from the world so that the heroic virtues of poverty, obedience, and chastity might triumph in him.
O God, You chose Saint Charbel as a model of all virtues, and You have converted many souls through his favors, miracles, prayers, and example.
Please grant, by his merits and intercession, this special request (name your request) if it be for my good and that of others. Through Saint Charbel's intercession, may I renounce all sin and sinful desires and be fully converted to You by the practice of true virtue, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Born on May 8, 1828, in Bekaa Kafra (North Lebanon), Youssef Antoun Makhlouf was the fifth son of a Maronite family of modest means. He was orphaned at a young age, and at the age of 23 entered the monastery of Our Lady of Mayfouq as a novice of the Lebanese Maronite Order of Monks. At the end of his two-year novitiate, he took the name Charbel after a martyr who died in 107 A.D. He was ordained as Father Charbel on 23rd July 1858 and spent the next 16 years in community life, before withdrawing to a hermitage. He then spent 23 years as a hermit, during which time he gained a reputation for sanctity, prayer, and miracles. St Charbel died while celebrating Mass in December of 1898. Pope Paul VI canonized St. Charbel on October 9, 1977.
