Eucharia has been a member of the Confraternity of Penitents for four years, has completed her formation, and is ready to pledge. Here is her story:
My name is Mrs Eucharia Ugwu, I am from Nigeria. I'm the third of eight children from a very remote village in Enugu State in Nigeria. My parents raised us in a very devout Catholic family although my Father died in my early age, it was my mom who raised us. I got married to Mr Paulinus Ugwu at age of 21, he is also from the nearby village of mine but he was living in another country called Benin Republic in Africa and also a nearby country in Nigeria. I moved with him to Benin Republic in 2014. We wedded in Catholic church and he was just a simple man, a devout Catholic and a business man with little education. We had four children by the names,
Ugwu Petra Ebubechukwu my first child, she is 9 years old.
Ugwu Samantha Eberechukwu my second child, she is 6years old.
Ugwu Miguel Ugonna my third child, he is 4yearsold and
Ugwu Maris Obinna my fourth child, he is 2years old.
My husband Paulinus Ugwu died on the February of this year, he suffered from intestine Opening, and when we got to the hospital, after series of test the doctor recommended operation for him so as to fix his stomach in order which he proceeded immediately, the operation was successful. They kept him in ICU to monitor him carefully after 2days, his fever began to go up and the doctors tried their best possible means to make the fever come down but all to no avail. He died by 12pm on Thursday 1st February 2024 at the age of 43years. I'm currently left with four children to take care of, I am a seamstress, I have experience in sewing and that is the skill I have been using to support my husband in expenses.
Since my husband did not left us any capital that I can use and start up business instead I am even struggling to pay up all the debt that we are owing. Currently I am selling off our properties to pay off those debt even though the money that will come out of those properties will not be enough to pay off the debts, at the end we are going to be left with nothing. Through the support of a benefactor from the Confraternity of Penitents, I have sold my husband's property in Benn and relocated back to Nigeria with my children because things will be much difficult for us in Benin Republic without my husband, because I don't earn enough money from the sewing work that can carry me and my children's expenses. I want to find a place where we can stay and I can find school for my children. And I will need to find a shop where, I will be selling clothes and also continues my sewing work in a big Way so that I can earn enough money to feed my children, pay school fees, house rent, water and electricity bills.
(The Confraternity of Penitents knows Fr. Augustine Mugawura, a wonderful priest in Uganda which is a safer country than Nigeria. Fr. Augustine has a school which the children can attend. He has offered to help Eucharia in starting up a business and finding housing. Through your kind donations on the Alms Fund link on this website. the CFP has raised money for visas and air fare for Eucharia and the children to get to Uganda. Once they arrive, they will need start up funds. The sale of these Advent wreaths will go toward helping Eucharia start her business and find housing.)
I'm happy to inform you that I have accepted to go to Uganda. I talked with Fr Augustine and he cleared some of my doubts and fears. And so I have made the decision to go there with my children.
The challenge that I have now is that, I need to work for Visa for five of us. And also need to travel to Uganda embassy for it which is up to 350 kilometers from where we live now. And we need money to run it all. Thank you for all your kindness and supports. I and my children appreciate you a lot and we will continue to pray for you. Thank you and God bless.
Eucharia Ugwu.
